APPRENTICE SPOTLIGHT – LILY KERR

 In Newsletter: Fall '23

In an effort to educate local municipal leaders about the many labor-related provisions included in new federal laws, including the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act, the Massachusetts Building Trades Unions have been organizing events in conjunction with members of Congress to ensure that cities and towns maximize their funding opportunities through partnerships with unions.

Many programs funded through these laws incentivize the use of registered apprentices, and the events have featured union apprentices talking about their experiences, and what the opportunity of being in a union training program has meant for them.  At the event in the 3rd Congressional District held at UMass Lowell, local leaders heard from IUPAT DC 35 First Year Apprentice Lily Kerr, who spoke about her experience so far in the field, and at the Finishing Trades Institute.

“I definitely had some nerves at first, but the crew and foreman have made me feel welcome since day one. I have learned so much on the job, and my coworkers have taught me a lot. They know how valuable it is to teach the apprentices because they know it will benefit our union for the future. Recently I went to my first week at the Finishing Trades Institute, and I learned a lot about the union, the benefits we receive, and how the union works to continue to keep and improve those benefits. I can truly say I love my job.” – Lily Kerr

Lily did an outstanding job of representing DC 35, the FTI, and the union apprenticeship model, and also gained a new fan in her Congresswoman, Representative Lori Trahan.
